Abstract
PURPOSE: To adsorption-remove simultaneously and easily NH3, amines, mercaptans, etc. by contacting these cpds. to activated carbon cation-exchange-bonding a metal having coordinate bondability to the cpds.
CONSTITUTION: By treating activated carbon with conc. sulfuric acid or nitric acid cation exchange groups are introduced into the carbon. In case the carbon is made from AN type polymer, it has cation exchange capacity at the time of formation. The carbon is then subjected to cation exchange treatment with a complex salt of a metal such as copper, silver or zinc to prepare metal-supporting activated carbon, which is used to adsorption-remove cpds. coordinating to the metal, e.g. NH3, amines, mercaptans and alcohols. This carbon has higher adsorbing power than that of unsupporting activated carbon, and it is effective in adsorption removal of basic cpds. such as NH3 and acidic cpds. such as H2S.
