Abstract

PURPOSE: To facilitate discrimination of patterns, by providing a feature point extracting part, which extracts high-degree feactures where existence of phase geometric feacture points such as end points, intersections, branch points and bending points on character lines and their positional relation are accumulated, to extract feacture points of complicated patterns.

CONSTITUTION: Scanning part 50 scans the paper surface according to the instruction of control part 90, and binary signals for regions including one character on the form are stored successivey in prescribed addresses of pattern memory 61. Next, after signals in pattern regions have been stored in memory 61, feature point extracting part 70 receives the instruction of control part 90 to reads contents of memory 61 according to predetermined procedures and detects end points, intersections, branch points, bening points, and so on the stored character pattern as phase geometric feature points. When the feature points are detected, the code indicating feature points is stored in the determined bit of the corresponding address on pattern memory part 60, and feature accumulating part 100 is used to generate a code for existence of white points, thus discriminating contents of memory part 60 accurately in discriminating part 80.
