Abstract

PURPOSE: To accurately measure the velocity and rate of flow of a medium without the need for making cavities in the wall of a flow measuring tube by using the first ultrasonic vibrator group arranged on the tube wall at equal distances and the second ultrosonic vibrator group provided facing to the first group.
CONSTITUTION: On the wall of a flow measuring tube 31, a group of vibrators 32 placed at distances (d) and another group of vibrators 33 similarly placed at distances (d) are arranged so that the normals of the vibrator surfaces of the two groups 32 and 33 are parallel to each other but the centers cross the normals obliquely. When ultrasonic pulse signals are emitted from the group of vibrators 32 driven by a vibrator-driving circuit 34, the directivity of the ultrasonic beam is maximum at a certain angle with respect to the normal direction of the arranged vibrator group because at said angle the ultrasonic wave phases agree with each other, and the signals having been affected by the flow of a propagation medium are received by the group of vibrators 33. Measuring the time difference between the drive and the reception by using a time-measuring circuit 36 permits the velocity and rate of flow of the medium to be known.
