Abstract
PURPOSE: To produce a polyester containing inert particles well dispersed therein in high concentration, by adding an ethylene glycol slurry of inert particles in a specified manner to the reaction system during the ester exchange reaction between a terephthalate ester and ethylene glycol.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction between a lower alkyl ester of terephthalic acid and 0.5W1.5mol times the acid component, of ethylene glycol (EG) is started in the presence of a known ester exchange catalyst, and the reaction is continued while an EG slurry containing 5W40wt% of inert particles, average particle diameter about 0.01W20μ, such as silica is added to the reaction mixture in such a rate that during a period from the start of the reaction to the time when the precent ester exchange reaches about 97%, an 80% portion of the total inert particles is fed over a period of at least about 15min. After the completion of the ester exchange, polycondensation reaction is carried out in the presence of a polycondensation catalyst such as antimony trioxide to obtain a polyester.
