Abstract

PURPOSE: To perform an on-line measurement of isometric ratio of a piece of cast iron to be continuously cast by a method wherein pulse laser rays are projected to one surface of a cast iron piece to generate ultrasonic waves and the ultrasonic waves propagating in the cast iron piece are detected.
CONSTITUTION: A pulse laser 1 projects a pulse laser ray onto a surface 2a of a sample 2 such as steel material etc. Elastic waves are generated in the sample 2 and they reach the other surface 2b of the sample. A part of laser rays from the laser 1 activates a timer 5. The laser rays from a laser 6 for the measurement use are also projected onto the other surface 2b of the sample 2. The output of a detector 9 is entered in an oscilloscope 11 and a memory 12 through an amplifier 10. By means of the propagation time of ultrasonic waves in the sample 2 and the thickness of the sample 2, the thickness of the isometric part can be obtained.
