Abstract

PURPOSE:To maintain cell voltage low and constant by interposing spacers between the anodes of the two mutually opposing two faces of expandable anodes and holding the anodes in such a manner that the distance between both cathode and anode is not expanded to more than a fixed limit. CONSTITUTION:Spacers 4 of an S shape or the like are used in the end parts on both sides of anodes 2 of the two mutually opposing faces of expandable metal anodes 2, and further cation exchange membrances 3 are disposed the cathode 1 and both cathode and anode, whereby a single pole type finger electrolytic cell is constituted. An aqueous soln. of alkali chloride such as NaCl is continuously supplied to the anode chamber and ion exchange water to cathode chamber and while the cathode chamber side is being pressurized, the power is supplied. In this case, the power is supplied at, for example, 2,000A, and electrolysis is carried out by setting cathode pressure at 130mm. water colmn, film current density at 23.5A/dm<2> and temperature at 80 deg.C, respectively. As a result, the cell voltage may be maintained at a constant voltage of 3.2V by continuously operating the cell for 6 months.
