Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the flexible optical fiber bundle of high transmittance by regularly arraying a multiplicity of the optical fibers composed of the covering glass which covers core glass and the eluting glass covered on the outside thereof in a sheath glass pipe and stretching the same with heating, then grinding away the peripheral part and further letting the eluting glass layer to elute.
CONSTITUTION: The circumference of core glass 1 of high refractive index is covered by covering glass 2 of low refractive index and further the circumference is covered by eluting glass 3 which is soluble in acid. These double-covered optical fibers 4 are regularly filled in a sheath glass pipe 5. Since no acid eluting characteristic is required for this sheath glass pipe 5, borosilicate glass of good workability is used. The outside barrel pipe 5 filled with the fibers is stretched with heating. Next, the sheath glass pipe 5 and the peripheral optical fibers of a high rate of deformation are ground away. Next, both end faces of the conduit are covered by protecting material after polishing and the eluting glass is eluted away by hydrochloric acid. This yields the flexible fiber bundle of high transmittance.
