Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve wear resistance, scuffing resistance, by heat treating the range near the piston top dead center of a cylinder liner by using a laser beam.
CONSTITUTION: The height of a holder 4 is determined so that a laser beam produced from a heat-treating apparatus 3 irradiates the position to be heat treated, then the heat treatment is initiated while rotating a rotatable table 2, simultaneously, the holder 4 is moved in the axial direction of a liner 1 at a constant pitch. Hereby, the irradiated portion of the inside surface of the liner 1 is heated and its surface is swollen and hardened. The swollen portion 1a forms constant pitch waves, which is continuous in the circumferential direction and discontinuous in the axial direction due to the movement of the holder 4 over whole heat-treated range. The inner surface of the liner 1 is honed in order to make the height of swollen portion 1a uniform. The roots 1b formed between the swollen portions 1a serve as oil reservoir during operation thereby further improving souffing resistance.
