Abstract
PURPOSE: To carry out the degassing and decarburization refining of molten metal in a simple and easy manner by using a refining container provided with electrodes for heating, a tuyere, a porous plug, a sliding nozzle and a hermetically sealable lid.
CONSTITUTION: Molten metal 10 to be refined is poured into refining container 1 lined with refractory 1a, having upper working hole 2, and provided with porous plug 4 and tuyere 5 in the side wall and bottom sliding nozzle 6. Three graphite electrodes 7 are put into container 1 from hole 2, and arc discharge is generated between electrodes 3 and molten slag 9 to heat molten metal 10. Electrodes 7 are then pulled out, and lid 3 is fixed to hermetically seal container 1. Simultaneously container 1 is rotated around the rotating shaft 8 and tilted. When tuyere 5 is dipped below the surface of metal 10, container 1 is evacuated. Fe2O3 or other metal oxide and a slag making material are charged from tuyere 5, and inert gas is blown from nozzle 4 to agitate metal 10. Thus, degassing and oxidation decarburization refining are carried out. Using this apparatus low C stainless steel is easily refined.
