Abstract

PURPOSE: Hydrocarbon fuel is combined with a specific amount of hydrogenated polybutadiene that has hydroxyls on chain terminals and specific hydrogenation degree to improve the fluidity at low temperatures.
CONSTITUTION: To 100pts.wt. of hydrocarbon fuel, is added 0.005W0.5, preferably 0.01W0.2pt. of hydrogenated polybutadiene that has hydroxyls on chain terminals and 50W100, preferably 80% hydrogenation degree (HPB-OH) as a fluidity modifier at room temperatures. HPB-OH is prepared by polymerization of butadiene using hydrogen peroxide as a catalyst, reaction of the resultant living polymer with an epoxy compound by a usual method and treatment with a protonic acid such as hydrochloric or sulfuric acid. The resultant polybutadiene contains many 1,4-linkages and 2W3 hydroxyls in each main polymer chain and is subjected to catalytic hydrogenation in the presence of ruthenium to give HPB-OH with a molecular weight of 1,000W10,000, preferably 1,500W5,000.
