Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain malonic acid or its alkali metal salt which is useful as an intermediate for syntheses of agricultural chemicals, medicines, etc., with simple operations without environmental pollution, by contacting trimethylene glycol with oxygen gas in an aqueous solution.
CONSTITUTION: Malonic acid or its alkali metal salt is obtained by contacting trimethylene glycol with oxygen(-containing) gas in an aqueous solution in the presence of a platinum group catalyst. Concentration of trimethylene glycol is preferably 5W30wt%, and the aqueous solution is favorably alkaline. The contact of trimethylene glycol and oxygen can be carried out in high efficiency, by blowing oxygen into the aqueous solution under stirring at ordinary temperature to 100°C for 2W30hr. The catalyst is pref. Pd, Pt, their mixture, etc. supported on activated carbon, and the amount is 0.01W5wt%, as the platinum element, based on trimethylene glycol.
