Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for a raw material of polyurethane, industrially and advantageously, by the reaction of a carbanilate with formaldehyde, in the presence of a specific cation-exchanger of the sulfonic acid type.
CONSTITUTION: A carbanilate expressed by the formula (R is 1W4C alkyl or phenyl; X, Y, and Z are Hs, halogens, nitros, etc.) is reacted with formaldehyde, in the presence of a cation-exchanger having a proton-exchange capacity of 0.1meq/g or more, of the sulfonic acid type, to give the titled compound. The proton- exchanger preferably has the largest possible proton-exchange capacity, because a small capacity reduces the reaction rate. DiaionHPK25 or Amberlite200(trade name), etc. may be cited as a preferable exchanger. A carbanilate as a raw material may be available advantageously from nonphosgenating stages.
