Abstract

PURPOSE:To start an engine in its exhaust timing temporarily advanced and improve the characteristic of starting of the engine, by providing a stopper that holds a movable wall member for a variable exhaust timing of the engine at the upward moving position. CONSTITUTION:On the upper level in the vicinity of an exhaust port 6 on the inner surface of a cylinder 1, a rotary body 11 with a movable wall 11b in housed. In accordance with a rotary speed a spring board 24 of an actuator 14 is rotated to move the movable wall member 11b through a lever 13. In this way, the timing of an exhaust passage 8 allowed to be opened or closed in a combustion chamber 4 can be varied. When an engine is started, the spring board 24 is stopped to a stopper 25 to hold the movable wall 11b at a start position C and advance the exhaust timing. After a starting of the engine, the actuator 14 is operated to shift an arm lever 20' to the side of a lower limit position and automatically remove the spring board 24 from the stopper 25. In this way, the starting characteristic of the engine can be improved.
