Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a resin, having lowered hardness and enhanced flexibility, without exerting undesirable influence on other properties, by the graft-polymerization of a specified rubber latex, in the presence of a specified radical polymerization initiator, under specified conditions.
CONSTITUTION: At least one vinyl aromatic compound monomer (A) and at least one vinyl cyanide compound monomer (B), and, if necessary, at least one (meth) acrylate monomer (C), are graft-polymerized with a rubber polymer latex, which contains at least 50wt% of particles having particle size of ≥0.3μ, in such proportions that the weight ratio of the solid rubber polymer in the latex to the total of A, B and C, is 15:85W35:65. 140% or higher degree of grafting is attained by using, as a radical polymerization initiator, a redox initiator, composed of an organic peroxide and a water-soluble iron salt, and by continuously adding the total amount of said monomers A, B and C and the initiator, to the reaction system. Thereby hardness is lowered and secondary workability is enhanced as compared with those of a conventional ABS resin.
