Abstract
PURPOSE:To economically obtain sulfur and hydrogen from hydrogen sulfide at the same time by condensing laser beams in hydrogen sulfide gas to dielectrically break down hydrogen sulfide molecules into sulfur and hydrogen. CONSTITUTION:Hydrogen sulfide is fed to gas container 3 from hydrogen sulfide gas reservoir 1, and laser beams generated from laser beam generator 4 are reflected by concave mirror 5 and condensed at point P. At this time, a violent flash is generated when the intensity of laser beams at point P is the order of GW/cm<2> or more and the threshold value of the internal hydrogen sulfide pressure of container 3 is about 20 Torr or more. The flash phenomenon is dielectric breakdown, and by the phenomenon plasma is explosively generated independently of the wavelengths of laser beams and the kind of gas to rapidly attain a high temp., whereby decomposition reaction H2S H2+S takes place. By this method hydrogen can be produced directly from cheap hydrogen sulfide in such a simple process.
