Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent hexavalent chromium from being generated in an incineration ash, by directly mixing a solid or a liquid waste material containing either one of hexavalent and trivalent chromium or both of them with a sulphate and incinerating the obtained mixture.
CONSTITUTION: In treating a solid or a liquid waste material by mixing ferric sulphate therewith, a chemical mechanism wherein hexavalent chromium is not formed is based on the fact that hexavalent chromium is reduced to trivalent chromium because SO2 gas generated by heating ferric sulphate shows strong reducibility. For example, in one embodiment, to 10kg of a sludge of a chromium plating factory containing 3,800mg/kg of chromium as trivalent chromium, a waste acid containing ferric sulphate [containing 4% as Fe2(SO4)3] is mixed with stirring and the obtained mixture is incinerated at 700°C for 30min in a fluidized bed type incinerator and, if an amount of hexavalent chromium in an effluent liquid is measured by a regular method, 247mg/l of hexavalent chromium is detected in the case of using no ferric sulphate at all and, if ferric sulphate is added in an amount of 0.5 times or more in the weight ratio to incinerate said mixture, hexavalent chromium is not detected at all.
