Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material for an azo disperse dye, by reducing 2,4-dinitrophenyl ether with hydrogen in a specific reaction solvent in the presence of a catalyst, and acylating the reduction product without isolation with an acylating agent.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I (R is lower alkyl substituted by 1W9C alkyl, halogen, etc., unsubstituted phenyl, phenyl substituted by halogen etc.), e.g. 2,4-dinitroanisole, is reduced with hydrogen in an N-substituted lower fatty acid amide, e.g. N,N-dimethylformamide, or a mixed solvent consisting of the amide essentially as a reaction solvent and a catalyst consisting of a metal of group VIII in the periodic table, e.g. Co, Ni or Pt, to give the compound of formula II, The resultant compound is, without isolation in another form, acylated with an acylating agent, e.g. acetic anhydride, to afford the compound of formula III (X is acyl).
