Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent water hammering at the time of closing of a swing-type automatic valve such as the automatic valve of a reciprocating pump and hold down flow resistance at the time of closing of the valve, by setting an energizing force in a direction to close the valve, at a prescribed level in such a range that the closing is not delayed.
CONSTITUTION: A valve element 9 is pivoted by support arms 3a, 3b to a valve stem 5. A coiled torsion spring 7 is fitted on a sleeve 8 fitted on the valve steam 5. The horizontal part 7a of the coiled torsion spring 7 is wound left from the lower end of the spring to the central part of the valve stem 5 to thrust the valve element 9. The spring 7 is wound right upward from the central part of the valve stem 5 so that the spring has equal numbers of right and left turns around the valve stem. The moment of the coiled torsion spring 7 at the time of closing of the valve is set at a level which is not less than 30% of that for the valve at an opening angle of 30° and which is limited in within such a range that the closing of the valve is not delayed. As a result, water hammering due to closing lag is not caused at the time of closing of the valve and flow resistance is held down at the time of its opening.
