Abstract
PURPOSE:To enlarge the measuring range of the absorptiometer by a method wherein a flash lamp is used as a light source for projecting light onto the tested subject, and the discharge current of the flash lamp is controlled so that the peak current value and the pulse width may be larger than predetermined values. CONSTITUTION:When the flash lamp comprising xenon gas filled in a bulb having an inside diameter D of 4mm. and an arc length L of 30mm. is operated with a peak current value of 1,000A/cm<2> and a pulse width of 1m sec, the total luminous flux instantaneously becomes 1.2X10<6>lumen. If the transmission factor of ozoneless quartz glass is measured for 2,200Angstrom by using this flash, the thickness up to about 20mm. can be measured. This means that far thicker subjects can be measured, as compared with the case where a xenon short-arc discharge lamp is utilized. In addition, when the peak current value is set to be larger than 300A/cm<2> and the pulse width is set to be larger than 30mu sec, the inconvenience of fluctuations of the beam- condensing efficiency is avoided, and the absorptiometer having a sufficiently high efficiency of light emission and a wide range of measurement can be obtained.
