Abstract

PURPOSE:To enhance the electrolytic efficiency by a method wherein, in the electrolytic tank of an alkali halide using a cation exchange membrane, an electrode-diaphragm composite obtained by uniting an electrode active substance to both surfaces of the exchange membrane is used to closely adhere the electrode and the exchange membrane. CONSTITUTION:A partition wall plate 6 is provided at almost intermediate part in a frame 1 of a picture frame like chamber to divide into an anode chamber and a cathode chamber and porous current collectors 9, 10 connected by connecting members 7, 8 are provided to the partition wall. An anode active substance is united to one surface of a cation exchange membrane and a cathode active substance is united to other surface of the cation exchange membrane to form an electrode- diaphragm composite 11. The surface having an anode ative substance present thereon of this composite 11 is contacted with the porous current collector 10 of an anode side and the surface having a cathode active substance present thereon is contacted with the porous current collector 9 of a cathode side to form a filter press shape in such a manner that a sandwich structure is formed succeedingly. Moreover, one surface of the current collector not contacting with the composite 11 is contacted with a flexible elastic connecting member 71 and other surface thereof is contacted with a plate like rigid connecting member 8.
