Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain hydrogen stably over a long period of time with low voltage by using flexible and porous electrodes of rigidity larger than a cation exchange membrane for the electrodes which are used for a water electrolyzing cell and are disposed oppositely via said membrane, and deforming these. CONSTITUTION:Porous layers 12, 13 having gas and liquid permeability and having no electrode activity are provided on, for example, both surfaces of a cation exchange membrane 11, whereby a membrane 1 with porous layers is provided. An anode 2 is, for example, an expanded metal deposited with an anode active component. Since it is usually not fully flat, it is drawn to an exaggerated curved shape. If a cathode 3 is made, for example, flexible, and force is exerted in an arrow direction, the membrane 1 is pressed to the deformed cathode 3 and is deformed to the shape of the anode 2. Since the cathode 3 has higher ridigity than the membrane 1, both of them deform in the final in such a way that they coincide with the shape of the anode 2. The membrane 1 is adhered tightly between the anode 2 and the cathode 3 in this way, and caustic alkali and water is supplied to the anode side and the cathode side, respectively, whereby the water is electrolyzed.
