Abstract

PURPOSE: To treat waste water efficiently at low running cost by a method wherein particles with specific gravity within a specified range are floated in a reaction tank and used as the carriers of biological membranes, and the waste water containing organic matter is circulated and treated.
CONSTITUTION: Particles, whose apparent specific gravity is 0.9W1, as the carriers of biological membranes are floated in a reaction tank and a particle layer is formed in the biological treatment of waste water containing organic matter. When self- circulation where the water to be treated is extracted from a lower portion of the layer and sprayed from an upper portion of the layer is conducted, the waste water and the biological membranes contact, and organic matter in the waste water is decomposed and removed. Accordingly, the waste water can efficiently be treated by a low running cost where only the power for the circulation of the waste water is needed and easy control is available.
