Abstract

PURPOSE: To make hydrogen sulfide present in the formation gas harmless by oxidation by bringing a chlorine-based oxidant and an alkali-neutralizing agent into two- stepwise contact with the formation gas passing in a flue duct portion.
CONSTITUTION: In the flue duct portion between a quick-cooling portion and a bag filter chamber, during the manufacture of furnace carbon black, the chlorine-based oxidant, e.g, chlorine gas, etc., is first brought into contact with the formation gas containing carbon black and then an alkali-neutralizing agent, e.g., aqueous ammonia, etc., is bought into contact with the formation gas in a stepwise manner, whereupon hydrogen sulfide present in the formation gas undergoes a dehydrogenation reaction to colloidal sulfur and hydrogen chloride. The colloidal sulfur is fixed in the carbon black and the hydrogen chloride is neutralized. Thus, the waste gas can be made harmless without the needs for desulfurization apparatus and therefore, can be discharged to the air.
