Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture steel material having wear resistant surface layer simply and easily, by putting a carburizing agent uniformly between two slabs or two thick steel plates, by closing tightly the periphery of the plates facing to each other by painting refractory material, then by heating the steel material.
CONSTITUTION: Heat treatment is achieved in a furnace at a temp. 900W1,300°C for 3W20hr. For example, a two-piece set of low carbon steel slabs contg. 0.15% C is used. When the slabs are placed one upon another, a carburizing agent is placed in a layer of uniform thickness on the upper surface of the lower slab. The carburizing agent is mainly composed of carbon material such as charcoal, coke, by addition with carbonate such as BaCO3 as an accelerating agent, and is formed into a layer 20W600mm in thickness. All sides of the slabs facing to each other are closed tightly by painting refractory material such as mortar 2W10mm in thickness. The steel material is heated to a temp. 900W1,300°C and is kept at the temp. for 3W20hr in order to carburize it. Hereby steel plates having surface layer excellent in wear resistance is manufactured.
