Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve desulfurization efficiency and decrease component variances of slag by adding quicklime or SiO2 base additives from the middle period up to the end period of blowing thereby controlling the final slag composition in such a manner that the weight ratio of CaO and SiO2 therein is within the specific range.
CONSTITUTION: If quicklime of 2W3 times the amount of the SiO2 calculated from the Si amount in pig iron is charged in converter steel making, the optimum slag components are obtained. In actuality, however, the slag components vary and therefore the slag is sampled and analyzed after the middle period of blowing when the quicklime charged in an early period slags almost. When the weight ratio of CaO and SiO2 of the analyzed value is smaller than 2, quicklime is added and when it is larger than 3, SiO2 base additives such as silica sand and silica brick scraps are added to control the final slag composition in such a manner that the weight ratio of CaO and SiO2 is kept within a 2W3 range.
