Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a fuel alcohol capable of substituting for petroleum easily, by oxidizing, reducing and distilling an oil recovered from a thermal decomposition product of a biological organic substance.
CONSTITUTION: A biological organic substance, e.g. a plant or waste, is fed from a tank 1 to a dryer 2, and passed through a crusher 3 to a thermal decomposition apparatus 4. The thermal decomposition oil thus obtained is oxidized and decomposed by an oxidation (decomposition) tower 7 into a ketone and a carboxylic acid, which are reduced in a reduction (alcoholization) tower 8, and distilled in a distillation column 9 to recover the aimed alcoholic fuel from a line 11. The thermal decomposition gas formed as a by-product in the apparatus 4 is recovered from a line 5, and the thermal decomposition char is recovered from a line 6 respectively. Both gas and char are used as a heat source, and residues generated from the towers 7 and 8 and column 9 are recovered from lines 10 and used as a fuel.
