Abstract

PURPOSE: To set simply and precisely a desired tension of a belt or timing chain, by determining the reaction of a tensioner when the rotation of an engine is at its peak, and pulling the belt by a servo-motor to allow the reaction to become a prescribed value and to set a desired tension in the belt.
CONSTITUTION: A crank pulley 5 is rotated by rotation of an engine, and the crank pulley causes, in turn, rotations of a cam pulley 1 and balancer pulley 6 through a timing belt 2. To the belt 2 is applied a tensioner pulley 3 having a rotation center 4 wherein the direction of reaction is designated an arrow A. When the rotation of the engine is at its peak, the tensioner reaction A is measured by a measuring device 7, and then the tensionin the timing belt 2 is caused to become a desired level such that the reaction will reach a prescribed value by pulling the tensioner pulley using a servo-motor or the like. Thus a desired tension is obtained simply, precisely, void of fluctuation without being affected by any influence of statical friction.
