Abstract

PURPOSE: To absorb and remove selectively carbon monoxide at about ordinary temperature and ordinary pressure and form a formate by absorbing carbon monoxide present in gas in an alcoholic alkali containing a specific amount of moisture.
CONSTITUTION: Under the conditions of ordinary pressure to 10 atm and 0 to 70°C, a gas containing carbon monoxide is treated with an alcoholic alkali absorbent liquid consisting of the main component isopropyl alcohol containing 0.1W5% moisture, whereupon carbon monoxide present in the gas forms a formic acid derivative in the presence of an alkali and then the formic acid derivative is absorbed and removed. Thus, carbon monoxide can be absorbed and removed easily at about ordinary pressure and ordinary temperature.
