Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a sintered base plate with high porosity, an increased surface- area and excellent strength by heating either iron fibers or nickel-plated iron-fibers with a given diameter in the air at a low temperature, subjecting the fibers to distribution sintering, and followed by compression moulding and re-sintering. CONSTITUTION:Either iron fibers or nickel-plated iron-fibers with a diameter of 2-50mu and a length of 3-300mm. are heated in air at a low temperature, for example, at 150-400 deg.C for 5-120min, thereby forming oxidized films on the surfaces of the iron fibers. The iron fibers thus treated are distributed in a given mould frame, and this is subjected to heat treatment, for example, in a reducing atmosphere such as hydrogen gas at 800-1,200 deg.C for 3-90min: some parts of the bulky moulding are firmly sintered. The thickness of the pre-sintered body is adjusted to give a desired thickness by compressing under a pressure of, for example, 1-2t/cm<2>. The thus prepared body is sintered again by, for example, heating in a reducing atmosphere such as hydrogen gas at 900-1,250 deg.C for 5-120min.
