Abstract

PURPOSE: A filamentary tow, suitable for a wadding of bedding, e.g. a futon, or clothing, easily openable, having a modified cross section and latent crimpability, and improved bulkiness, retention thereof and hand, and consisting of synthetic filaments.
CONSTITUTION: A synthetic polymer, e.g. a polyester, is extruded from spinneret holes aWf of special shape, and the cross sections of filaments a'Wf' are modified to make the modification ratio S thereof satisfy the formula [S is the perimeter (cm) of the cross section/cross-sectional area (cm2) ratio; D is the fineness (denier) per filament (preferably 1W20)]. The filaments are then drawn to give the objective filamentary tow having solid crimps developed by the latent crimpability. Preferably, the number of crimps per filament of the tow is ≥5 peaks/inch, and the percentage crimp is ≥10%. A wadding of a futon preferably contains 50wt% or more the filamentary tow.
