Abstract

PURPOSE: Using a catalyst that is prepared by adding boron trifluoride to the reaction product from an organonickel compound and an organic alkali metal compound in a specific proportion, the titled polybutadiene is obtained without the reduction in polymerization activity, in spite of a small amount of the catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: In the presence of 1,3-butadiene, the reaction between (A) an organic carboxylic nickel salt or nickel organic complex and (B) at least one selected from the group consisting of compounds of (a) alkali metals, (b) metals of group II and (c) merals of group III in the periodic table is effected where, when component B is a, the amount is 1.5W3.0mol/mol of component A, whereas, when it is b, the amount is 0.7W1.5mol and in C, the amount is 0.3W1.0mol. Then, (C) boron trifluoride or its complex is added to the reaction product to prepare the polymerization catalyst. Butadiene is polymerized in a hydrocarbon solvent using the catalyst and 0.1W10mol/mol of component A, of water to produce the objective low-molecular-weitht polybutadiene of more than 80% cis structure.
