Abstract

PURPOSE: To stably manufacture a graphite dispersed metal or alloy in a shortened process by dispersing graphite particles coated with a substance other than metal in a molten metal or alloy having no compatibility with graphite followed by solidification.
CONSTITUTION: Graphite particles are treated with aluminum phosphate, a soln. of stannous chloride in hydrochloric acid, a soln. of palladium chloride in hydrochloric acid or the like to form a coat of a substance other than metal on each particle surface. The particles are charged into a molten metal or alloy such as molten Al or Al alloy having no compatibility with graphite, mixed, and dispersed by agitation, and then the melt is solidified. Thus, the graphite particles are dispersed uniformly, and even if the resulting ingot is remelted, the graphite particles maintain the dispersed state without causing flotation. Accordingly, the metal or alloy is provided with the self-lubricity of graphite, and it becomes lightweight and has high strength and wear resistance. This graphite dispersed metal or alloy is suitable for use as a material for elements such as bearing of a sliding contact mechanism.
