Abstract

PURPOSE: To effectively manufacture p-t-butylbenzaldehyde and/or its dimethyl acetal, by electrolytically oxidizing p-t-butyltoluene in methanol under the existence of support electrolyte.
CONSTITUTION: Absolute methanol or methanol of about ≤10wt% moisture content, is used. At least, one of perchloric acid, tetrafluoroboric acid, sulfuric acid, acidic sulfate, alkylbenzene sulfonic acid, etc. or these salts, are used for support electrolyte and about 0.1W20wt% said acids or salts based on p-t-butyl toluene, is used for the electrolyte. Temperature of electrolytic oxidation is about 0W60°C, preferably 20W50°C and carbon rod, etc. are used for anode and nickel wire, etc. are used for cathode. Aldehyde and acetal are contained in the reaction mixture and in case of converting acetal to aldehyde, said mixture is hydrolyzed in acidic state after distilling methol from the mixture, if necessary.
