Abstract

PURPOSE: To make speed high and efficiency high by arranging plural elastic materials of different velocities of sound between an acoustooptic modulating medium and a piezoelectric crystal plate symmetrically at the center thereby constituting an ultrasonic modulator.
CONSTITUTION: Ni5 and In6 are evaporated to 3μm thickness on one surface of an acoustooptic modulating medium 1 such as glass and dielecric and are so disposed that the respective centers thereof become symmetrically at an equal spacing. The metal films 5, 6 give a phase difference of π/2 to sound waves. A piezoelectric crystal plate 2 is provided thereon and electrodes 3, 4 are dividedly provided on said crystal plate 2 so that the direction of the elecrtic field applied on each converting element becomes opposite at every two as shown by arrows 7. If high frequency voltage is applied to the electrodes 3, 4, the parallel wave surfaces differing in phase by π/2 are produced in the adjacent sections 9, 10 of the modulating medium, whereby artificial wave surfaces 11, 12 are formed. This increases the incident angle θ of light 13 satisfying Bragg's conditions. Because of this, the speed of modulation may be increased and the speed and perfromance may be made high.
