Abstract

PURPOSE: To prolong the breakdown life of optical fibers and improve reliability by applying tape windings as a size enough to cause sinking of U-shaped striplike materials on the central side of the cable and putting fibers in a sagged state in the cable.
CONSTITUTION: A filament tension number 1 of high tensile strength at the center of the cable is enclosed to uniform thickness by cushion materials 2 such as nonwoven fabrics or PP split yarns. Striplike materials 3 of a U shape in section are twisted radially in plurality around this, and optical fibers 4 are put in the respective channels. First, the optical fibers are twisted at a radius (r) right after the twisting and tapes are cross wound on such cable core. As the tapes 5 are wound, the respective U-shaped materials 3 are tightened and sink by δ to the central side of the cable, thus the fibers 4 float and assume a state of having sags. Thereby, the breakdown life of the optical fibers may be prolonged and the cable of high reliability is obtained.
