Abstract
PURPOSE: A flame-retarding resin composition which has fire resistance and, when burned, does not evolve corrosive gases, prepared by adding aluminum hydroxide to an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer having a specific vinyl acetate content.
CONSTITUTION: Aluminum hydrixide (120W250pts.wt.) is added to 100 pts.wt. of an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer having a vinyl acetate content of 40W60wt% or a blend prepared by blending together at least two different ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymers or an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer and a polyolefin, so as to provide a vinyl acetate content of 40W60wt%. Unless the vinyl acetate content is at least 40wt%, the composition does not show a flame retardancy specified in VW-1 of UL Specification, whereas if the content is higher than 60wt%, the composition tends toward adhering and this is unfavorable for processability in producing compounds or wires. With respect to the amount of aluminum hydroxide used, use of below 120pts.wt. does not provide satisfactory flame retardancy, and use of more than 250pts.wt. has a remarkably deleterious effect on the physical properties.
