Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a warp sizing agent having excellent film-forming properties, water resistance, adhesive properties, machine stability and dilution stability, by producing an emulsion of a copolymer containing a vinyl ester and an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid in the presence of PVA.
CONSTITUTION: In producing an emulsion of a copolymer containing 55W97mol% of a vinyl ester, 3W15mol% of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid and 0W 30mol% of an acrylate ester or a methacrylate ester, 1W20wt%, based on the total monomers, of polyvinyl alcohol is allowed to be present. As the vinyl ester, vinyl acetate is particularly preferred. When the copolymerization ratio of the ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid is below 3mol%, the alkali solubility during desizing is lowered and when the ratio exceeds 15mol%, the film becomes hard and brittle, and shows lowered water resistance. When the copolymerization ratio of the (meth)acrylate ester is higher than 30mol%, the film lacks strength because of excessive flexibility and tends toward blocking
