Abstract

PURPOSE: A bentonite muddy water preparation agent for stabilizing excavation that is composed of a modified polyvinyl alcohol obtained by saponification of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid and vinyl acetate copolymer, thus showing high caving prevention and having good visocity and bentonite dispersing properties.
CONSTITUTION: After copolymerization of (A) an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid such as acrylic acid or maleic acid, its ester or salt and (B) vinyl acetate, the copolymer, preferably of 200W2,600 polymerization degree, is saponified, preferably to a level of more than 60mol% to prepare a modified polyvinyl alcohol, which is used as a muddy water preparation agent. The amount of component A is preferably 0.05W20mol% based on the total copolymer. Further, in the stabilized muddy water consisting of water and bentonite, the amount of ventonite is 1W20pts.wt. and the modified PVA, 0.01W20pts.per 100pts. of water, thus giving preferably stabilized muddy water for excavation.
USE: It is suitably used for foundation work in construction work and boring of petroleum wells.
