Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce an electrolytically chromated steel sheet excellent in paint adhesiveness and resistance to chronological retort deterioration, by treating an electrolytically chromated steel sheet with a fluorine ion-contg. acidic water solution and then with a chromate electrolyte free of sulfuric radicals.
CONSTITUTION: The surface of a steel sheet is subjected to a conventional electrolytic chromating treatment in a one-liquid method, to form an under coat of metallic chromium and an upper coat of hydrous chromium oxide at once. The surface is then treated in an aqueous solution containing a fluoracid only or a fluoracid and a fluoride, adjusted at a concentration of 0.1W10g/l and pH4 or less, but not containing any sulfuric radical, to reduce sulfuric radicals in the hydrous chromium oxide layer to a substantial extent. Thereafter, the treated steel is cathodically electrolyzed with use of a chromate electrolyte mainly composed of anhydrous chromic acid free of a sulfuric radical additive, to form a hydrous chromium oxide layer.
