Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the response of the yield of a reformed gas to the control of the supply of alcohol by sealing packings in an alcohol evaporating section so as to reduce the heat capacity of the section.
CONSTITUTION: The heat exchanger of an alcohol reformer reforming alcohol into a hydrogen-rich gas with waste gas from an alcohol engine as a heat source is composed of a plurality of units 9, and waste gas is fed between the units 9 and into outer paths 10. Alcohol supplied from the alcohol inlet 2 of each unit 9 is evaporated in the evaporating section 5 through the path 4, introduced into the reforming section 7 through the alcohol vapor path 6, reformed into a gas with a reforming catalyst 8, and taken out of the reformed gas outlet 3. At this time, each evaporating section 5 is packed with ceramic particles 13, hollow metallic spheres or metallic tubes as packings to reduce the heat capacity of the section 5 including quantity of heat required to evaporate alcohol, thereby enhancing the response of the yield of the reformed gas to the control of the supply of alcohol.
