Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain titled porous product useful as a water-absorbing agent for human bodies, a water-absorbing roll or a water-retaining agent for gardening, by grafting a water-double monomer to a partially acetalized porous polyvinyl acetal product thereby to introduce therein strongly hydrophilic groups.
CONSTITUTION: A porous product having excellent water absorption and water retention is obtained by grafting a water-soluble monomer, e.g., acrylic acid or a monomer which, when neutralized or hydrolyzed, becomes water-souble, e.g., methyl methacrylate, onto a partially acetalized porous polyvinyl acetal product obtained by acetalizing PVA with an aldehyde in the presence of a pore-forming agent and an acid, in the presence of a polymerization initiator, e.g., redox type initiator, in a medium such as water or ethanol and then, if necessary, neutralizing or saponifying the product.
EFFECT: The porous product has a high rate of water absorption and a dried porous product recovers flexibility quickly by submerging it in water.
