Abstract
PURPOSE: To provide the titled composite material having superior mechanical properties by covering the surfaces of aluminous fibers, with a specified metal or metal compound, having a specified composition consisting of Al2O3 and SiO2 and not showing the reflection of α-Al2O3 with respect to the X-ray structure and using the covered fibers as a reinforcing material and a specified Al alloy as a matrix.
CONSTITUTION: Aluminous fibers used as a reinforcing material have a composition consisting of ≥72% Al2O3 and ≤28% SiO2, and the reflection of α-alumina does not appear in the X-ray diffraction image. The fibers are covered with one or more kinds of metsls which dissolve in Al up to ≤1wt% maximum amount or the intermetallic compound of two kinds of the metals, e.g. Ni and Cu. A bundle of this reinforcing material is drawn into a mold tube, one end of the tube is dipped in Al or a ≥40wt% Al-contg. alloy melted in an Ar gas atmosphere, and the other end is vacuum degassed to impregnate the molten metal into each space between the fibers. The resulting material is then cooled to obtain a product.
