Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a fuel additive, capable of reducing the NOx emission, easily and economically, by mixing an iron compound and a higher fatty acid which is solid at room temperature.
CONSTITUTION: The objective fuel additive is prepared by adding (A) an iron compound containing ≥50wt% of iron and pref. having small particle size (e.g. red iron oxide, hydrated ferric oxide, etc.) to (B) a ≥10C higher fatty acid which is solid at room temperature (e.g. capric acid, lauric acid, etc.) and optionally contains a viscosity regulator such as liquid paraffin under stirring, and stirring the mixture for a short time. When the viscosity regulator contains water, the (B) mixture is heated at about 100°C before the addition of (A). The weight ratios of the fatty acid, the viscosity regulator and the iron compound (as iron) are pref. 0.5W30, 20W 96.5, and 3W50. The order of the addition of each component is arbitrary.
