PURPOSE:To eliminate unfavorable influence due to a stabilizer and a surfactant accumulated in continuous processing under replenishment by a small amount by carrying out processing with a processing soln. as a preceding bath to a developer. CONSTITUTION:The processing soln. has an arbitrary pH, yet it is very effective at >=8, especially 9-11pH. The composition consists mainly of an alkali agent, a buffer and a chelating agent. The small replenishing amount is about 1-1,000ml per m<2> of a sensitive material, and it corresponds to the amount of a developer replenished to a developing tank and the amount of a regenerating agent used when a spent developer or an overflowed developer is not regenerated and is regnerated by removing halogen ions by a method using an ion exchange resin, electrodialysis or other method, respectively. As compared to a case where no processing soln. is used, desensitization is prevented, and the contrast and the density are not lowered.
