Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable automatic setting of an appropriate discharge energy level in nonconsumptive electrode electrical discharge machining by detecting the discharge duration of effective discharge and comparing two successive discharge durations to regulate the discharge energy level on the basis of the result of the comparison. CONSTITUTION:A pulse generating power source 1 supplies a pulsating current through an electrode 2 and a workpiece 2'. The value of the current is changed in setps in accordance with signals provided by a discharge energy level setting circuit 10. During the discharge between the electrodes, effective discharge duration is detected 4 from the voltage waveform between the electrodes and is stored in a memory 6. Then discharge operation is repeated with a different current to detect 4 the effective discharge duration Te.
