Abstract
PURPOSE:To enable automatic setting of an appropriate discharge energy level in nonconsumptive electrode electrical discharge machining by detecting the discharge duration of effective discharge and comparing two successive discharge durations to regulate the discharge energy level on the basis of the result of the comparison. CONSTITUTION:A pulse generating power source 1 supplies a pulsating current through an electrode 2 and a workpiece 2'. The value of the current is changed in setps in accordance with signals provided by a discharge energy level setting circuit 10. During the discharge between the electrodes, effective discharge duration is detected 4 from the voltage waveform between the electrodes and is stored in a memory 6. Then discharge operation is repeated with a different current to detect 4 the effective discharge duration Te. Thus detected discharge duration Te is compared 9 with the effective discharge duration Tem detected and stored in the memory 6 immediately before the detection of the discharge duration Te to discriminate the level of the actual machining energy, whereby the discharge energy circuit 10 sets the value of the next current. The ratio between the resistances R1 and R2 of a voltage divider is determined according to the current increase ratio of the pulse generating type power source 1.
