Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent the embrittlement of a Ti plate forming a partition wall due to generated hydrogen by connecting the cathode and the anode of a double electrode used to electrolyze an aqueous soln. of alkali metallic salt by a diaphragm method to each other with the partition wall bonded with a specified composite member.
CONSTITUTION: The cathode 3 and the anode 4 of a double electrode are electrically connected to each other through a partition wall composed of a metallic plate 1 of iron, stainless steel or the like having resistance to a catholyte and a Ti lining plate 2. Said plates 1, 2 are connected to each other with a composite member 5 having outer surfaces coated with the same kind of metal as the plate 1 and Ti on the plate 3 side and the plate 2 side, respectively. The area 8 of connecting the member 5 to the plate 1 is regulated to 5W20% of the area of the different metals joining part of the member 5. Thus, the embrittlement of Ti due to gaseous hydrogen generated on the cathode is prevented, and a reduction in the contact strength and an increase in the electric resistance is also prevented.
