Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a mold which is extremely low in the coefft. of thermal expansion and is high in mold strength such as cold bending strength by making combination use of polyvinyl alcohol with a resol resin coating sand grains.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture of 100pts.wt. a resol resin and 5W50pts.wt. PVA is mixed with sand grains, whereby the resin-coated sand grains are obtained. Here, if the PVA is below the lower limit, the effect is not outstanding and if it is above the upper limit, the degradation in mold strength is admitted. This coated sand is obtained by mixing PVA and sand grains with the resol resin simultaneously or separately in arbitrary order at an arbitrary time from the start of its production until the end thereof. Otherwise, it is equally well to beforehand mix the resol resin and the PVA at a desired ratio, and to mix this mixture with the sand grains or to add the PVA after mixing the resol resin and the sand grains. It is possible to add auxiliaries such as calcium stearate and salicylic acid at the mixing.
