Abstract

PURPOSE: An aqueous solution of crude saccharide fatty acid ester containing fatty acid ester as an impurity is treated with hydrogen peroxide and lipase to decolorize and purify the titled compound used as a surfactant or in other applications without environmental pollution and toxicity.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution or suspension of a crude saccharide fatty acid ester such as arabinose fatty acid ester containing at least fatty acid esters such as glycerol fatty acid ester as impurities is treated with hydrogen peroxide and a lipase such as acylglycerol lipase to effect decolorization of the crude saccharide fatty acid ester and hydrolysis of the fatty acid esters. The hydrolysis of the fatty acid esters with a lipase and the decolorization with hydrogen peroxide can be effected simultaneously or in order.
