Abstract

PURPOSE: The reaction between platelet titanium dioxide that has grown perpendicularly to the c axis and lead chloride is conducted in a steam atmosphere to readily produce platelet lead titanate giving sintered ceramics with improved electrical characteristics.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture gas containing TiCl4, hydrogen and carbon dioxide or another mixture gas containing TiCl4, oxygen and nitrogen is subjected to the reaction at high temperature to produce platelet titanium dioxide growing perpendicuarly to the c axis. Then, the reaction between the resultant platelet titanium dioxide and lead chloride is conducted in a steam atmosphere at the temperature higher than 600°C to produce the objective platelet lead titanate. The production of sintered ceramics from the platelet lead titanate makes it possible to control the crystal orientation of the particles, whereby electrical anisotropy is imparted to the ceramics and their characteristics are improved.
