Abstract

PURPOSE: In preparing fibrous active carbon, to shorten time required for preparing it extremely, by oxidizing preliminarily raw material acrylonitrile type fibers, followed by subjecting them to oxidation treatment under specific conditions.
CONSTITUTION: Raw material acrylonitrile type fibers are preliminarily oxidized under oxidizing atmosphere until their equilibrium moisture content at 80% RH (relative humidity) becomes 2W5%. The prepared oxidized fibers are adjusted with phosphoric acid, metaphosphoric acid, pyrophosphoric acid, etc. and an inorganic or organic phosphorus compound, e.g., an alkyl- or arylphosphate, and a boron compound, e.g., boric acid, metaboric acid, etc. so that the fibers contain 0.01W 0.1wt% calculated as elements such as P and B. The prepared fibers are subjected to oxidation treatment in an atmosphere of an inert gas, e.g., N, He, Ar, etc. having an oxygen content 0.5W5vol% at 250W400°C for 1W30min. Finally the fibers are heated in an atmosphere of steam, CO2, NH3, etc. at 500W1,000°C and activated, thus to enable the preparation of fibrous active carbon in a short time.
